British Airways (BA)

Last flown: 2010 - London to Sydney

Ratings:

Comfort:Below average
Food:Good
Beverages:Good
Entertainment:Average
Service:Average
Ontime Departure:Average
Comments:BA was once a national flagship carrier the British could be proud of - Concorde et al. However, its standards have fallen below reasonable expectations when you compare it to Virgin or JAL - especially when BA charges a premium on airfares. If you can get a flight cheaper than BA, you'll most likely end up with a better experience.

Emirates

Last flown: March 2012 from Manchester to Dhaka via Dubai (return)

Ratings:

Comfort:Average
Food:Good
Beverages:Good - included wine, beer and spirits
Entertainment:Good
Service:Good
Ontime Departure:Poor - left Dhaka 2 hours late, causing us to miss our connection in Dubai. However, they gave us a free overnight stay in Dubai!
Comments:The flight was good, but departing Bangladesh two hours late was unforgivable. However, knowing something about Bangladesh, I suspect it was not the airline's fault.

Comfort:Average
Food:Below average

Entertainment:Good - but no gambling games such as Blackjack or Poker

Air New Zealand

Last flown: 2010 - Australia to USA

Ratings:

Comfort:Good
Food:Good
Beverages:Good
Entertainment:Very good
Service:Very good
Ontime Departure:Good
Comments:This is one of my favourite airlines. However, they keep flagging my boarding passes with the mark "SSS", which means "selected for special search", because back in 1999 I flew with my kids from Australia to the USA and had long hair, nails painted pink and blue, and a nose bleed, so someone decided I looked unsafe. The reason my nails were painted is because my daughters were bored in the Auckland airport lounge and entertained themselves by painting daddy's fingernails. Then when they called for our flight to board, I stood up and my nose suddenly decided to start bleeding, as it does when I am very tired, and the girl at the boarding desk noticed and was concerned and suggested that I not fly, which was not an option, and flagged me in her computer.

So from that date on my boarding passes with Air New Zealand always say "SSS" which means the Americans always drag me off and give me the full special strip search. Could someone please tell me how to get Air New Zealand to remove this from their computer???

Qatar

Last flown: November 2012 from Manchester to Kuala Lumpur via Doha (return)

Ratings:

Comfort:Average
Food:Average
Beverages:Good - included wine, beer and spirits
Entertainment:Good - but no gambling games such as Blackjack or Poker
Service:Excellent
Ontime Departure:Good
Comments:Qatar Airways amazed us twice.
First, my wife left her jacket on the plane in Kuala Lumpur. When we flew out a week later, we asked about it at the check-in counter. To our amazement, the clerk went downstairs and promptly returned with the jacket - a week later!
Second, we flew from Kuala Lumpur to Manchester with a connection at Doha. Our flight arrived late in Doha and we barely had time to get to the terminal and get to the gate as they were already boarding for departure to Manchester. We were concerned that our luggage wouldn't make it, but the check-in clerk assured us our bags would be on board. We were amazed in Manchester to see our bags on the carousel!

Scandinavian Airlines (SAS)

Virgin Australia

Last flown: February 2012 - from Adelaide to Melbourne

Ratings:

Comfort:Average
Food:No food for economy domestic travel
Beverages:No drinks for economy domestic travel
Entertainment:None
Service:Average
Ontime Departure:Very good
Comments:Booked flights with Virgin Australia from Adelaide to Melbourne to Manchester flying with their partner airline Etihad. Virgin would only credit my frequent flyer card so far as Abu Dhabi and refused to credit the leg from Abu Dhabi to Manchester, claiming that I did not board, even after I scanned and sent them my boarding passes. Not happy Virgin!

Virgin Blue (now part of Virgin Australia)

Last flown: August 2010 - from Melbourne to Los Angeles

Ratings:

Comfort:Excellent - extremely good!
Food:Excellent
Beverages:Excellent
Entertainment:Excellent
Service:Very good
Ontime Departure:Very good
Comments:This was one of the best flights I have been on. A new aircraft with comfortable seating arrangements, excellent food and service. After being unimpressed flying on no-frills Virgin domestic flights in Australia, I was really sold on Virgin Blue for international flights after this experience. Unfortunately, they did away with the Virgin Blue name and credibility, and my last flight with Virgin International was fobbed off onto Etihad Airlines and my frequent flyer card was not fully credited.
